863. O golden days of laughter, light, and play,

SONNET 863
By JH Sayyar

O golden days of laughter, light, and play,
When time moved beneath the sun’s gaze,
With skinned-up knees we danced away,
And chased the wind through summer days
The world was wide, held within our hands,
Each stick; a sword, each stone a secret prize;
In whispered woods or castle-building sands,
We dreamed with fearless hearts and open eyes.
The rain was music on the windowpane,
And bedtime tales were keys to magic lands;
We knew no weight of sorrow, grief, or pain—
Just joy that bloomed like flowers in our hands

O childhood, fleeting spark of pure delight,
You burn forever in the sad hearts’ soft light.
