Ode to the Cuckoo
By JH Sayyar
1
O Cuckoo! You sing for eve in the tree,
I want to listen to your voice in morn,
It prolongs rest, makes sad heart worry,
In spring, your voice in full swing, I adorn,
You leave the nest for two little issues,
Comes at noon to feed them with the bill,
Goes and comes back to look after the chaps,
They are grown up; little wings they use,
In search of food, in trees, or on a high hill,
Both have learnt the art of how to avoid traps
2
I am afraid of autumn coming, ask, why?
It finishes leaves; make little nests bald,
No shade for kiddies, in vain your try,
You need, for your safety, a fort walled,
I do not know when you go leaving me alone,
In which dwelling, far away from my home,
Where there will be lush green trees,
I will not be able to listen to your tone,
Listening to your voice in trees, I will roam,
In search of you in spring, as on the shore geese
3
I am true; you left me like my Rose,
In heart, love tree loaded with leaves,
Full of promise fruits, hanging in different pose
Of love bill and coo; your absence; me grieves,
What is promise? Woman’s lips; wrapped in smile
Beaming lips and deceptive eyes, a love gift,
For the lovers, who receive gladly in hotels
A promise to live forever, but intention vile,
Next day with other, a deceptive love shift;
Of bill and coo, Ah! Avoid cheeky bells
