505. I saw a bird sitting on a bough

SONNET 505

By JH Sayyar
I saw a bird sitting on a bough
Unknown its song and its note
I moved forward; could not go
I did not follow; learnt by rote
I did ponder over it; all night!!
I did think about its holy tone!
Exposing the mystery in fright;
The song was happy in moan!
Listening to it I came to know
It was my heart within the bird
Saying me reap, what you sow
I did wonder at it when I heard;

We fall into futile affairs soon!
Forgetting heart’s voice; a boon
