SONNET 693
By JH Sayyar
O shattered trust, thou pale and fleeting shade,
Once clothed in vows that time could not undo,
Now lost beneath the lies that love betrayed,
A withered rose that never truly grew
Thine eyes, once stars that lit night with grace,
Now gleam with frost, indifferent and cold;
No warmth remains upon thy changed face
A tale of hearts grown distant, silent, old
Where once I knelt and whispered hope to skies,
Now silence mocks the prayers I used to speak.
The echoes of thy false and honeyed lies
Still sting the soul and leave the spirit weak.
Yet from thy faithless ruin blooms my might
For truth is born in love's forsaken night.
