948. O Rose! let us kiss in the falling cataract,

SONNET 948
By JH Sayyar

O Rose! let us kiss in the falling cataract,
Where roaring waters cleanse love pain,
And time forgets its ancient, rusted chain—
In the wild embrace, let the world retract.
No courtly vow, nor reason’s cold contract
Shall bind our lips beneath the silver rain;
Nature’s flood, both fierce and yet humane,
Shall drown regret, all that we once lacked
See how the spray like trembling stars flight,
And glistens on thy petals, flushed with flame
Each droplet seals our love in sacred rite.
What care, have we for fate, or fear, or shame?

Let torrents break, let tempests rage their might
We kiss, and all the worlds become our name.
